What is Celebrex (Celecoxib)?

Celebrex is the brand name of the effective anti-inflammatory drug Celecoxib used to treat pain and inflammation for a number of conditions.

Celebrex is a type of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID), specifically a COX-2 Inhibitor which is used to relieve pain and inflammation for a number of conditions. Celebrex works by stopping the production of a natural substance to the body COX-2, which is responsible for pain and inflammation. Celebrex is commonly prescribed for Arthritis, period pains, acute pain, osteoarthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis. Celecoxib, more commonly known as Celebrex; is prescribed to individuals that struggle to perform their daily activities due to the pain and inflammation caused by their condition. Celebrex helps by supressing the pain and inflammation caused and can help individuals add some form of normality back into their life by allowing them to perform their daily activities.

Celebrex is an anti-inflammatory medication and gets to work by reducing the hormones in the body that are responsible for causing pain and inflammation. Like the majority of anti-inflammatory medicines, Celebrex can help to reduce pain and swelling primarily by blocking the main enzyme that is responsible for inflammation, prostaglandins.

What is Celebrex Used for?

Celebrex belongs to the NSAID's family of medications which means that it is not only used to treat one single condition, it can be used to treat a number of painful medical conditions. Celebrex has been licensed to treat the following common conditions:

  • Arthritis
  • Acute Pain
  • Menstrual Pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis

How to use Celebrex

Celebrex should be taken orally, usually once or twice daily as directed by your doctor. Celebrex should be taken with food as the majority of NSAID's can cause stomach unrest by wearing away the stomach lining. The dosage you are prescribed by your doctor will depend on the condition that you are currently suffering from and the pain that you are experiencing.

Celebrex should be swallowed with a full glass of water to ensure the tablet reaches your stomach where it will start to dissolve and enter your system. It is important to allow the tablet time to fully digest before lying down, do not lie down for approximately 10 minutes after consumption.

For certain conditions such as Arthritis, it may take your body around 2 weeks to experience the full benefits of Celebrex.

For individuals that are taking this medication as and when they need it, NSAID's are most effective when taken at the first sight of pain.

Celebrex Dosage

Celebrex (Celecoxib) when used as prescribed by a doctor or pharmacist can be used to treat a number of inflammatory conditions. It is important to always take Celebrex as prescribed by your doctor and ensure that you complete the full course of your medication to experience the full benefits. Celebrex comes in a number of dosages:

Celebrex 100mg tablets

100mg is typically the starting dose for any patient that has been prescribed Celebrex. Depending on the severity of your condition this dosage may be increased to 200mg, however the doctor would always monitor how your body reacts to celebrex 100mg before increasing the dosage to 200mg. Celbrex 100mg is usually prescribed to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Celebrex 200mg Tablets

Your doctor may choose to prescribe celebrex 200mg tablets if your condition is quite sever and the pain caused by certain symptoms is quite high. Typically celebrex 200mg tablets are used to treat Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and the management of acute pain. Celebrex 200mg tablets should usually be taken twice per day with a meal, usually morning and evening.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you have been prescribed celebrex 100mg or 200mg tablets it is important that you take them exactly as prescribed. We recommend setting frequent daily reminders when it is time to take your tablets. In the event that you have forgotten to take a dose, you should take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember. However if at the time you remember it is nearly time to take your next dose, you should simply skip the forgotten dose and continue as normal with your next dose. Never double up on your medication in the event of forgetting to take your tablets.

If you accidentally double dose you should contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Celebrex Risk Factors

Celebrex and other NSAID's can increase the risk of a heart attack of stroke, especially if taken over a prolonged period of time. If you have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease, the risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke will increase if you are taking Celebrex.

Celebrex can cause ulcers and damage to your stomach due to certain ingredients within the medication wearing away your stomach lining. The risk of this is increased particularly if you are taking Celebrex on an empty stomach. To reduce the risk of this you must only take this medication on a full stomach or with food.

You should always tell your doctor if you have previously had any adverse effects to certain medications, particularly other NSAID's, aspirin or drugs called Sulphonamides (which are used to treat bacterial infections).
